They say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. A healthy, delicious and filling breakfast can energise and motivate you, kick starting a great day with tasty fuel to keep you going well beyond lunch. Skip on the brekky or get it wrong and you’ll be searching for the snacks before you hit your morning meeting.
Excluding your big breakfast plates, which no one has time to make first thing on a weekday morning, your traditional everyday breakfast options are fairly grain-heavy. There’s plenty of cereals made from wheat, rice or corn, plus all the other bread-based choices available. If you’re gluten intolerant or just wanting to skip on the grains first thing in the morning, you need to get a little creative.
Of course, Mother Nature provides plenty of delicious tasting fruits to fuel your morning but, unless you’re loading up a smoothie or sitting down to an entire fruit buffet, you’ll probably find you’re craving something more filling within a short time.
So, what’s a busy, hungry person to do first thing on a weekday morning?
Say hello to our crunchy, grain-free vegan granola.
Packed full of delicious nut clusters, seeds and coconut flakes, this granola is a great grain-free alternative to kick start your day. Dishing out a heavy dosage of good fats and proteins, it will leave you satisfied and full while providing you with all the good stuff your body needs.
Simple to throw together and good to keep in an airtight container for three to four weeks, it makes a quick and easy breakfast – if you can make it last that long! Awesome as a grab-by-the-handful snack too, it’s a healthy treat you don’t need to feel guilty topping up on.
Delicious with milk, on top of porridge, to add some crunch to ice cream, or straight out of the jar, we love that the nut and seed base is so simple to flavour in different ways. Maple syrup and cinnamon are our go-to, but cardamon and orange zest make a tangy twist, while cacao nibs and a spoonful of tahini are a decadent addition.

Crunchy Grain-Free Granola
- 2 cups sunflower seeds
- 1 cup cashews, chopped
- 1 cup almonds, chopped
- 1/2 cup pumpkin seeds, chopped
- 1 cup coconut flakes (large flakes, not shredded)
- ¼ cup maple syrup
- ⅓ cup coconut oil
- ¼ tsp salt
- ½ tbsp cinnamon
- ¼ tsp ground cardamom
- Zest 1 orange
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- Preheat your oven to 160˙C.
- Add the sunflower seeds, chopped cashews, almonds, pumpkin seeds and coconut flakes to a bowl.
- Add in the coconut oil, maple syrup and salt and mix to combine. If you’re using any optional flavourings (which we highly recommend!) toss them into the bowl and mix to coat.
- Spread the granola mixture evenly onto a parchment-lined baking tray and bake for 25-30 minutes, stirring the granola every 15 minutes or so.
- Store your granola in an airtight container for up to 3-4 weeks.
